OGE itself does not have authority to take action in response to potential ethical violations by Pruitt, and in the letter, Apol said OGE expects the EPA to "review and analyze" Pruitt's conduct alongside a simultaneous response from the inspector general for the EPA. "I don't mean to denigrate Mr. Pruitt, but doggone it he represents the president of the United States and it is hurting his boss".
And Pruitt - among the most aggressive of Trump's appointees in cutting federal regulations - enjoys wide support among GOP lawmakers, several of whom are either standing by him or at least avoiding publicly scolding his actions.
In a February 14 "Preliminary Intelligence Enterprise Threat Assessment Review" memo from EPA's Office of Homeland Security Intelligence Team, according to the senators" letter, agency officials used all caps and bold print as they concluded that the justification for the coverage outlined by Pruitt's protective security detail in an October 17 memorandum "DOES NOT employ sound analysis or articulate relevant "threat specific' information appropriate to draw any resource or level of threat conclusions regarding the protection posture for the Administrator". Instead, even as revelations about Pruitt piled up this week, Trump was reportedly still entertaining the idea of installing Pruitt as attorney general, a position for which his primary qualification may be willingness to squelch the Russian Federation investigation. Pruitt only paid for nights that he slept at the condo and has called it an "Airbnb" style arrangement, but external ethics experts have said it could raise further questions if the owners held the room open for him even when he didn't pay.
Capping off the week, EPA ethics officers walked back their clearance of Pruitt's sketchy condo rental deal, revealing that they had not been given all the relevant information necessary to make a reasonable call.
"The U.S. attorney's office determined that there was no probable cause to meet the statute and there was no crime committed, so they declined", he added.

― "Threatening tweets" against Pruitt and Sen.
President Donald Trump should stand behind his EPA chief despite media frenzy over alleged scandals, says a radio talk show host and longtime conservative activist. One letter to McCarthy threatened: "We will hurt you and your family".
In a New York Times report from last Thursday by reporters Eric Lipton, Kenneth P. Vogel and Lisa Friedman, Wilcox allegedly said, "They run the variety of direct death threats - "I'm going to put a bullet in your brain" - to implied threats - 'If you don't classify this particular chemical in this particular way, I'm going to hurt you". Sullivan used a version of the same quote as an example of a threat to Pruitt in his interview with CNN.
Despite Trump's insistence that Pruitt is being hounded over his policies, the EPA seems unsure whether or not its embattled chief has indeed received death threats. EPA's press office did not respond Friday to provide details of any specific threats or arrests.
