Oli earned considerable political capital as well as an anti-India image during his previous tenure as prime minister when he refused to relent to Indian pressure to amend Nepal's Constitution.
Pantnagar (Uttarakhand), Apr 08 (ANI): Nepal Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, who is on his three-day visit to India, was conferred with Honorary Doctorate by GB Pant University of Agriculture and Technology in Pantnagar.
Prime Minister Modi also outlined the commonalities between his Sabka Saath Sabka Vikas motto and PM Oli's Samridh Nepal, Sukhi Nepali vision.
The Nepalese prime minister said that he also shared with Modi, Nepal's concerns about alarming scale of trade deficit and stressed on the need of implementing measures to expand Nepal's export.
He added, "The agenda's which I carried along with also was welcomed by India".
"I have assured (Oli) that India will continue to cooperate with them in their efforts of Nepal's economic development and prosperity".
The proposal is politically significant, and comes almost two years after China agreed to construct a strategic railway link with Nepal through Tibet to reduce Kathmandu's total dependence on India.
Oli's three-day visit is in line with the tradition of a Nepalese premier visiting India on his first overseas trip.
Trump economic adviser says US, China trade deal likely
Despite the Chinese retaliatory action, Kudlow said that the relationship between Trump and his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, is "unusually good".
Oli's visit is being seen as highly successful, especially as the two leaders held one-on-one meetings without aides before delegation-level talks began.
Worse, Oli believed that he was overthrown from power in 2016 with some diplomatic manoeuvring by India. Despite India's massive amount of assistance in the aftermath of the devastating natural disaster in April 2015, relations with Nepal have taken a substantial hit after India's support to the Madhesi community during Nepal's constitutional crisis and the economic blockade that followed. There was a fear that Oli could well have visited Beijing instead of New Delhi but Prime Minister Modi himself and the External Affairs Ministry machinery have spent time and energy courting Oli and the Communist Party leadership in Nepal.
Admittedly, Modi was disturbed by Oli's past record of being unabashedly pro-China, and his stridently nationalistic utterances in the run up to the parliamentary elections in 2017, where he swept into power in an alliance with the Maoist Center.
He stated that his government attaches high importance to further strengthening friendly relations with India.
The two Prime Ministers inaugurated the Integrated Check Post at Birgunj in Nepal. "This is based on mutual respect", he said.
"I invited PM Modi to pay a visit to Nepal at the earliest convenient time, I am hopeful that the visit will take place soon", he said. They are more developed and more advanced than us.
Modi also said that he and Oli have agreed to develop inland waterways for the movement of cargo, which would provide additional access for Nepal to Indian seaports.
The two prime ministers also witnessed the ground breaking ceremony of the Motihari-Amlekhgunj cross-border petroleum products pipeline at Motihari in India.
