Henry Vincent, 37, from Kent, was stabbed during a break-in at the home of pensioner, Richard Osborn-Brooks, 78, in Hither Green on Wednesday.
A second suspect in the burglary, believed to be a white man, fled the scene prior to the arrival of police and is unaccounted for.
The alleged victim said a woman had gained access to his home in Farningham, Kent, by claiming she had been assaulted and was seeking refuge until a relative arrived.

Named by Sky sources as Richard Osborn-Brooks, the pensioner was held at a police station on Wednesday on suspicion of murdering a suspected burglar in Hither Green, southeast London.
Osborn-Brooks, who suffered bruising to his arms, was arrested on suspicion of murder but has since been bailed pending further inquiries.
"The old man deserves a medal and to be let free. I saw the body laid in the street and another guy jump in a van and leave", Gordon Williams, a neighbor, said.
The 38-year-old, who died after a struggle with the pensioner, had an accomplice who dragged him towards a van before leaving him for dead, according to an eyewitness.

The 26-year-old, who played for 76 minutes, added: "We knew they were going to sit in to hit us on the counter". "It's more about the expectation being so high".
One suspect, armed with a screwdriver, forced the 78-year-old homeowner into his kitchen when he discovered them, while his accomplice went upstairs, Scotland Yard said.
"I thought it was someone drunk but I managed to look out of the window". I think he was dead already.

Fellow local Gordon Williams, 44, heard "moaning and groaning" before seeing the man on the ground, saying: "I had just gone to to bed and I heard moaning and groaning".
DCI Simon Harding said: "I would like to speak with anyone who has information regarding the outstanding suspect from the burglary, who is believed to be a white male; he may have told someone what happened at the address".
'Did you see this vehicle? "I ask anyone who can help to call our incident room as soon as possible".
