With Wednesday marking 50 years since the death of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., a Brevard County civil rights activist recalled meeting King in the 1960s.
"Martin Luther King has influenced me as an advocate by his courageous views and his willingness to publicly speak out on issues that are controversial", she explained. He lived and died in a nonviolent way. "I believe, because of him, we can overcome these things", 17-year-old Beatrice Igboekwe said. "That is what we need to be engaged in, and I'm excited about these movements that exist". Just over 100 years later, Dr. King continued this effort and called upon Americans to reject ugly impulses and prejudices, and to recognize the beauty and the humanity of all people, regardless of the color of their skin. That was very touching for me because that's what I needed that day. "Even though there seems to be toxicity, we can get past toxicity".
"He would know that we as a nation can, must and will do better", he added.
Given Idlewild's history during the 1968 Sanitation Strike, this made for the flawless backdrop fro a day dedicated to Dr. King's legacy. At 8 p.m., "American Experience - Roads to Memphis" presents an emotional account of the events that led to the assassination in 1968, telling contrasting stories of the civil rights leader and James Earl Ray, through the words of King's closest confidants. "It's same old stuff, and it's getting worse", he said.

"I'm still anxious and frustrated", said Lawson, his black hair turned grey. Because I thought, well it was bad number one, but I felt selfishly the sense of panic that he's gone, and who's going to lead us now?
"It brings me to a place to pause and say, where do we go from here?" said English.
